I’ve finally added a Nintendo GameCube to my retro gaming collection—and I couldn't be more thrilled. This little silver cube might look unassuming, but it holds a huge amount of excitement for me.
The GameCube was Nintendo at its most experimental, delivering bold, colorful adventures that still hold up today, the tiny discs, and of course, that distinctive controller that somehow manages to feel perfect for just about any game.
The first two titles I was most excited to dive into were The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Super Mario Sunshine.
Wind Waker is pure magic: that cel-shaded art style still looks gorgeous, and the ocean exploration gives it a sense of scale and adventure that was ahead of its time. I’ve only just begun my journey across the Great Sea, but I’m already hooked by its charm and storytelling.
Mario Sunshine is a bit more chaotic—in the best way possible. It’s fun, bright, and just the right level of challenging. Using FLUDD to clean up Isle Delfino has reminded me how creative and different this entry in the series was. It’s not just about nostalgia either—these games genuinely hold up, and playing them on original hardware adds something special to the experience.
There’s something satisfying about rediscovering these classics the way they were meant to be played. The GameCube might not have had the massive commercial success of other consoles, but it delivered some truly legendary games. I can’t wait to expand my library—Metroid Prime, F-Zero GX, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door are definitely on my radar next.
